DESCRIPTION:<a href="https://deengate.com/event/islam-and-the-challenges-of
-atheism-4/register">Islam and the Challenges of Atheism</a>\nInteractive
workshop designed to help thinking Muslims work through the issues raised
by contemporary atheism in a meaningful and systematic way. The idea that
human life is ultimately meaningful and that the universe is the product o
f a benign Creator are central to Islamic self-understanding. Yet both pro
positions have been undermined in modern societies. This can lead to confu
sion and bewilderment as British-born Muslims attempt to reconcile their i
nherited beliefs with the intellectual challenges of living in a post-Chri
stian society. This interactive workshop is designed to help thinking Musl
ims work through the issues raised by contemporary atheism in a meaningful
and systematic way. Topics to be covered include: Where does the religiou
s impulse come from? What is the intellectual history of secularism in the
West? Is atheism an all-encompassing system of thought? What are the rati
onal bases for belief in God and Revelation? What are the fruits of faith
and unfaith? How can Muslims articulate their faith intelligently in a mod
ern society? Speakers: Mawlana Amjad Bapu Riyaz Timol – a doctoral candi
date at Cardiff University’s Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK. Li
